Some of you may have noticed that Apple Time Capsules, as they approach the
age of 18 months, are tending to fail, they just stop working with no
indication as to what has gone wrong apparently it is the internal power
supplies that fail, speculation on Apple Support discussions suggest it is
because of constant high temperatures. There is a very long thread about
this problem on the Apple Support Discussions.

Sure enough last Monday I arrived a my office to find my Time Capsule (18
months old) dead as a dodo.

It was suggested in the Discussion that if you purchased it at the same time
as a Mac then any Apple Care taken out for the Mac would also cover the Time
Capsule. I didn¹t and it is not possible to purchase Apple Care separately
for a Time Capsule.

I phoned the Apple Support 0800 number (option 5 I recall for Œother apple
equipment¹ got through to Ireland for a change) and told them about my
problem and asked them if they had fixed the problem if I bought a new one
(I didn¹t want it failing again after 18 months). The support guy (named
Paul) said he wasn¹t aware of any ongoing problems with Time Capsules at
that point I almost lost my temper with him and asked if he never read the
Apple Discussions.

Anyway, to cut a log story short, after hanging on the phone for around 30
minutes while he talked to his supervisor, because I have Apple Care in
force for a Mac (unconnected with the Time Capsule) they agreed to send me a
replacement Time Capsule free of charge, when it arrives I put the dud one
into the same box and return it to apple if you look on the Apple Store
there are lots of refurbished Time Capsules!

If you do not have any current Apple Care active then I am not sure where
you stand.

With all the publicity about Time Capsule being fitted with ŒServer Grade¹
Hard Disks when they were introduced, it is very disappointing that
apparently they didn¹t pay enough attention to the power supply.

Hope this tale, albeit with a satisfactory ending in my case, helps someone
else.

Paul Owen
