It doesn't seem typical to me as for me iTunes is nicer than ever with
the new store design. It so happens I've recently found myself burning
17 audio CDs - each one has gone through just fine and I've listened
to them all and they're just fine too. Not much help I know, but it's
not all horrors here. I'm running OS X 10.6.1 on a basic Intel iMac
and using iTunes 9.0.1

You don't seem to be alone though:

Can you delete the Library's .xml file and recreate it from your music
files? Maybe the current one has become corrupt.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.
