Sounds an unlikely combination, I know. I have come to my narrow boat for
Christmas and - having recently installed Snow Leopard, I find that the
settings for my 3 mobile wi fi dongle have gone and I can't connect. The marina
network is working for internet (hence sending this via mobile me and not MAIL)
but it won't "do" my mail . Goodness knows why. I don't have the 3 phone number
/ details with me (indeed, I don't know WHERE I have them!)

However, I thought the time machine backup I've done from my iMac would have
them and I'd rather cleverly be able to transfer them to my macbook..

Sadly, I can't seem to access system preferences from the time machine external
drive using my macbook. Is there a simple way that I can see my system
preferences from about 5 months ago?

I am anxious about not being able to get my emails from other accounts all over
the Christmas period - there could be important things being missed!
