Am I right in thinking that when you boot with shift held down, it's
booting into safe mode? Cos if so, that would explain the lack of
sound/network - it's not loading the drivers!
What happens if you turn it on whilst holding down option?

Thanks James, I have now.
The chimes sounded but when I let go of the keys it refused to boot up
ending up with the circle with the diagonal line. Needed to reboot
holding shift again to get anywhere. When booted still no sound or airport.

I'm assuming you've also reset the PRAM, what with having no startup
chime?
