thanks for responding, I'm putting it into the usb of my macbook pro, will try the reset method...out of interest, i have a maxtor usb drive that requires both usb ports to power it, could this be related? adrian

Have you tried resetting the SMC of the iMac? Switch it off then pull the power cable for 15 secs then reboot.
