I'm putting it into the usb of my macbook pro, will try the reset method...out 
of interest, i have a maxtor usb drive that requires both usb ports to power 
it, could this be related?

Hi Adrian
What are you connecting the iPhone into? if you connect it directly into the 
back of the iMac you shouldn't have any USB current issues. Have you tried 
resetting the SMC of the iMac? Switch it off then pull the power cable for 15 
secs then reboot.
