I dont use the maxtor and itouch at the same time, just that the maxtor has a 2 
usb lead to connect to the drive to power it up....wonder if there's not enough 
power coming out of these USB ports?

probably. how exactly does it do that? do you have to plug into two at once?

you could try ejecting the disk but not disconnecting and see if the ipod works 
ok then (without the maxtor drawing power)--
