have you messed with the Displays prefs (eg click 'mirror displays') did you try dragging the DVD window into the projector via the window bar? the machine could think it is adjacent in any direction but probably left or right. If the DVD is going full screen, hit command 1 to make it small, drag it over then hit command 0 or command F (I forget which) to full-screen it. If it shows the desktop on the projector then it's working.
