There is a firewire 800 to 400 cable. I think you just plug in. $00 devices work on 800, but not vv.
Apple removed firewire from several machines last year, but quickly put it back. I think that people in movies etc use it a lot: 800 seems to me much faster than USB 2. Hope that helps.
