I remember this problem happened to me after I installed an
application called Speed Download.
I think after Sam removed it, the problem disappeared.

I had exactly the same problem on a client's Mac a while ago but
don't have my laptop with me today, I'll chek my notes when I get
home and replay them. In the meantime try setting your default
download location in Safari to a different folder then download the
program again. Also, look in Applications > Utilities > Console for
any messges from Safari when the error occurs then paste those
messages into another email.

Downloading an app called DoubleTwist or trying to. Normally I would
right click and select d/l the linked file. This doesn't work here as
there is another page in between. If I just follow the click to d/l
procedure, I get a black page in Safari which Activity Monitor tells
me is downloading something. When it stops there is nothing to find
on
my computer. Any ideas? intel iMac on 10.6.2.
