I have done a stupid thing. I plugged my Freecom external drive that I use for
Time Machine in using my laptop power cable 19V 3.16A. The right power cable is
12V 2A.

The Sync button on the drive is glowing weakly but it is not showing up in Finder
or Disk Utility. It does appear in System Profiler>Firewire as Unknown Device.

Ominously there is a slight smell of burning electrics (could be my
imagination). I have unplugged it!

I am on to Freecom about it but does anyone have experience of this or any
ideas about fixing it, other than sending it back to Freecom?

It cost £122 a year ago.

Possible thing that might work - taking the caddy apart (will void any warranty that you may or may not have voided already!) and trying the drive inside with another controller... But depending upon the Freecom controller, it might have fried the drive's controller board as well, if it doesn't filter/regulate the voltage!
