You could also look at a drive dock. Take the drive out of the Freecom case and plug it into the dock. I've seen them for around £20 depending on the interface.

I plugged my Freecom external drive that I use for Time Machine in using my laptop power cable 19V 3.16A. The right power cable is 12V 2A. The Sync button on the drive is glowing weakly but it is not showing up in Finder or Disk Utility. It does appear in System Profiler>Firewire as Unknown Device. Ominously there is a slight smell of burning electrics (could be my imagination). I have unplugged it! I am on to Freecom about it but does anyone have experience of this or any ideas about fixing it, other than sending it back to Freecom? It cost £122 a year ago.
