Cheers for your adivce - I took to the Apple store and they said it
was going to be a costly RAM or Logic board based Graphics Chip
replacement and so I bought a new Mini instead... the iMac is now our
iTunes server in the lounge for now - if I need it fixing I might just
turn to you for some work...

I did the sero-faormatting and rigerous reinstall in the first
place...
