it's going to do that if it can't join the network. Chances are that they are 
set up not to allow people to just drop in. Are these networks you are 
expecting to be able to join (eg advertised as free in a coffee shop and you 
got the password etc from them) or just 'some network we found'?:-)

as for CD drives, yes, they can be temperamental -- try a different brand of CD.

laptops are guaranteed worldwide -- get to some kind of apple dealer if you 
can. In the meantime, see if you can enable 'tapping' in System Prefs/Trackpad 
so you just tap your finger instead of clicking.
