Ranulph,

You introduced me to Nisus a year or two ago, and I love it. Much nicer than Word!

Do you have any suggestions for an email program other than Mail?

I wasn't here when Phil sent his request. I know there's been an answer. But for those of you looking for a wordprocessor that strips carriage returns, try Nisus. The find and replace is particularly powerful. www.nisus.com

There's also a macro (provided) called form paragraph, which will take a chunk of text which has carriage returns, and form it into a paragraph.

As column readers will know, Nisus is my favourite wordprocessor. These features are one reason.

Sorry Phil, I sent my reply before I read the others - oops. Look good, though, I may get it - well done for finding it.

Thanks all.

Some of you may not have noticed that I found a nice little utility that does the job:

http://mailsteward.com/wordwrapper/

Nice thing is that it will process a text file that's on the system clipboard. So I can copy a block from Word, "wordwrap" the clipboard and paste cleaned-up text into Indesign. Easily worth $15.

Phil,

You could do a 'search/find and replace' on the 'return' putting in a 'space' but instead of clicking 'apply to all' (or whatever) click 'next' for subsequent surplus returns and then 'skip' for the ones you want to keep.

I know it works in Quark and Word but the phraseology is different for different apps.

Good luck,
John

All,

Does anybody know of an application that will strip out unnecessary carriage returns in a Word (or rtf or text) document. A translator has supplied me some copy in which they've inserted lots of unnecessary carriage returns, presumably in order to make the column width look like the finished document layout. Of course it's now a painful nightmare to drop the new text into InDesign.
