Stuart, I went to the link for mac support in your post and followed a link to one or two sites to download free icons. At http://iconfactory.com/freeware I downloaded several icon folders. Once on your mac you just open one of these icon folders, select an icon and right click to 'get info'. In the top left corner of the long info window that opens up you will see the icon; highlight it and copy it (cmd-c). Then select the file or folder you want to have this icon and repeat the 'get info' selection; after highlighting the existing icon at top left simply paste (cmd-v) the icon you previously copied. It worked fine for me. It may be to do with the image type?
