well...it didn't!:-) it just got on with deleting it all...perhaps if I
had restored the machine from TM that would have done it, but too late
now, unfortunately. I'll archive the back-up or something, and use
EasyFind etc.

With OS 10.6, normally Time Machine will ask if you want to replace or
reuse the backup, especially when you've moved machine/changed logic
board. With 10.5 there's a tricky procedure to follow to change the
device listed in the backup folder's settings.
