A bit of good news/bad news on the MiFi front:
Good news, there's a free and apparently straightforward (haven't tried it
yet) way to unlock the MiFi I bought from 3, to put a native French SIM in it:
http://mobile.engadget.com/2010/05/10/huawei-e5830-mifi-i-mo-blessed-with-unofficial-free-unlock-too/
Good news (if you're thinking about getting a MiFi but haven't yet), it looks
like the one I got just a couple of weeks ago, the E5830, was the last of the
those; they're now selling a newer version, the E585, with a considerably more
informative display (and Zibri's unlocking that one too):
http://recombu.com/news/three-mifi-huawei-e585-hands-on-everything-we-wanted-from-the-e5830_M12012.html
Bad news (perhaps) if you're planning to get one of these and hope to be able
to get a PAYG SIM to use outside the UK: the new E585, although otherwise very
similar, apparently uses a micro-sim whereas the old one used a standard SIM.
That might make it harder to get a PAYG one in some countries?
All of which still leaves me wondering about who, if anyone, sells a PAYG SIM
with data in France? Anyone know?
thanks in advance,
Ben

Hi Philippe,
Assuming Tobio's advice works for you re the hardware, perhaps you can
fill in the other part, the SIM?
I've got a MiFi from three, which I expect I can unlock; and I'm going
to be in a rural bit of southern France for a few weeks in a month or
so, with no broadband, but usable 3G.
Is there a French network that will sell me a SIM on a reasonable
pay-as-you-go package? E.g. in the UK at the moment, three's current
deal on the MiFi PAYG is 5GB over thirty days for £15; O2 do a SIM-only
PAYG for phones at £10/month which includes 500MB of data (which I
assume would work in an unlocked MiFi). Is there something like that
available in France?
thanks in advance,
Ben

Hello,
I'm decamping to a friend's flat in the mountains as the heat in
Grenoble is becoming unbearable (38c and v v humid). Problem is that
his flat has no phone line and I expect the internet cafes to be
closed until December (It's in a ski resort).
So, I'm looking for a MIFI router that works with Macs and is
unlocked/unlock-able so that I can use it here and in the UK. I know I
could get a dongle but I'd like to use multiple devices and to share
the connection with others.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks
Philippe
