I have even started the process of restoring from it (up to the point of committing).

Is it worth using Disk utility to verify it, or should I start saving for a replacement just in case?

hang on a minute. There's the dropped external disk -- where does restoring from it come into it?

I would say beware. Had a similar thing, disk worked for three days, suddenly died. You just can't tell. Use it for non-vital stuff from now on? or spare back-up?

But frankly you can't really tell. You may have shortened its life or done nothing.
