reinstalled OS again and it worked. Thanks for the input;)
most people would *probably* not notice, it was just slightly muddy sound, as it were. But I've gradually invested in high quality cables and connects etc over the years and have a good ear for it.
recording the solution just in case anyone trawling the web as I did, for something iike "itunes not playing songs properly" (that only gets you stuff abut not playing at all, from my investigation), comes across it.
