Sorry to come into this topic so late, but I've been away. I just want to say that I am sure I speak for all the members of SMUG when I say how very much we have appreciated Jason Davies' light touch on the helm, and his wise pronouncements when such were needed. Jason Kitkat must be very pleased to have placed "his baby" in such capable hands, and to know that it has continued to operate in the same spirit and with no changes.
Having moved to Oxfordshire, I have joined Oxmug (web only) in case I ever need local help or advice. So far the group seems to me to be singularly lacking in life or sparkle! No, there is nothing quite like SMUG or the kindness and generosity of SMUGGERS! One question, though: it still puzzles me as to why we are so coy about being listed – or, rather, not listed – in MacFormat Magazine among all the other Mac-User Groups of the UK. I would have though we would be proud to stand up and be counted. Anyway, well done, Jason – you do a splendid job! According to Google groups, we have 200 members (though I'm sure some of those are duplicates). Like most groups, there's a hard-core of posters (though lurkers are welcome). more to the point, I have been using email lists since about 1995, and moderating lists of one sort or another since the late 90s. I think you would be hard-pushed to find a list with a better culture. Messages are friendly, helpful, to the point without being obsessive. Sam is a hero but others do try their best too and sometimes we solve things Sam doesn't comment on;) He does short-circuit a lot of trial and error with swift definitive answers, and given that he makes his living from supporting people, he's very generous spending so much time here. I take a small amount of credit for knowing when to act (I have banned one person, and have got pretty good at not letting spammers through, which can be harder than you might think) but most of all, I'd like to say it's a pleasure to 'run' this list because you all make it easy to know when lines are crossed (by not crossing them very often, if ever). A good email list is not easy to create and harder to maintain -- you collectively do 99% of the work. I joined this list in disgust at LMUG many years ago. I offered to moderate the list because I knew I could make that particular contribution and am very happy to do my bit that way. so thank you Sam, Jason (for creating such a good list) and all of you for being such good company. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Sussex Mac User Group" group.
