Basically (as i understand it) in order to be alongside all the other
MUGs on apples website and MacFormat, you need to be a full blown user
group, with comittee meetings and a chairman, treasurer and all the
formalities that that entails... This way is much simpler.
however it might still be possible to get some kind of mention in mac
format, but they tend to do an article about different groups and what
they do, and we don't "do" much... maybe if we had a meet-up, and
someone took some photos and wrote a few column inches about the day
and sent it in we might get featured?
Apple ignoring emails about it is also a factor. Those webpages have
apparently not been update for years. I spent far too much time getting
to grips with it all, not getting anywhere, and gave up. Now I can't
remember the precise details of the labyrinth.
Some of you may remember me double-checking a while ago about whether we
wanted to go the way of other groups with membership fees, lists,
meetings etc. I am not in a position to organise such things -- nothing
is more depressing than chasing £2 a month subscriptions from people and
forcing them to leave if they don't (after how many warnings?) to
organise meetings that no-one had asked for that we lament low
attendance at where someone talks about a bit of software they like and
you can get a 10% discount for something you weren't that bothered about
but looks ok on the night.
Which is what some MUGs do;)
We have 200 members. We have a great culture. If we were losing members
it would be a concern. We have a steady trickle of new people. More to
the point, we *retain* people who join. Lists that haemorrage membership
because of a lousy culture need to advertise, which just inflates the
problem as people join only to be asking millions of generic questions
and get annoyed by/annoy the less helpful existing members.
SMUG is the quiet one in the corner. When they come and talk to us, we
have plenty to offer;)
