restarted, deleted, even deleted my local itunes library and started it
again (it has nothing in it at the moment apart from podcasts and now
one music track)
Tell me you have it working on yours? If it is then I would feel
happier knowing it is something I have done, lol!

If you create a smart list or a normal playlist containing just podcasts, it
does not sync the contents to the iPad, although does show them within
iTunes as if they should be there.
I have not got smart lists working :( but a normal playlist as long as you
have a normal music track within the playlist it will sync any podcasts also
in the playlist.
So it seems a problem, which is a pity. I hope Apple fix it!

Try connecting your iPad again and doing another sync, I had the same
