I set up the forwarding, and so the thousands of emails have been forwarded to my Gmail account. I have since downloaded them to my computer, and assume they are now safe. I plan to archive the mailbox and copy to an external drive.

It's strange. I have used email for years and years but never scratched below the surface, as I never needed to.
good luck with all that. It *sounds* like you're safe (but given the sensitivity of the information, I would have multiple versions, eg download Mailsmith (a pop emailer) and download them all *again* (Mailsmith's database is probably the best in the business and I would use it still if only I could sync a pop server across several machines).

But always check that whatever is retrieving them is not deleting them from the server!

Good luck with all this. I am also in a situation where a colleague is ... problematic though it's not fraud or anything like that. I know how awful it can get.
