make sure you don't have the account synced such that his deleting them 
all would also delete your local version. I recommend something absurdly 
secure like creating a new user on the Mac, downloading the whole lot, 
then turning off interet access for that account before logging out. 
Then you have a cast-iron version for reference in Mail.
