It sounds like the client was in sync with the mail server, so
deleting one deletes the other. People have their own client setup in
various ways depending upon how you want access. Do you want access to
all emails on every machine, do you want web access, do you only use
only desktop.

Does your brother have working regular backups in place, as those
might have your local mail box.

If the emails are still in the deleted folder, depending on the client
your using, create a local folder or mailbox and copy move into that
new folder.
