Hello Shirley,

(Definitely not Sam here!)

Plug in your device and ensure iTunes can see it.
Select your device in the iTunes side bar
Ensure the Summary tab is selected (running along the top of the main iTunes 
window)
Click on 'Check for Update' (or whatever it is - I'm not plugged in!)
When it offers to do the update just follow the instructions. This usually 
means going away and having a nice cup of tea as it takes a while. Make sure 
your Mac keeps awake during the process.
Disconnect at the end and away you go.
