Unfortunately a new member of staff bought the device direct from Apple, which we normally avoid, instead of from a local supplier; it's only a month old but it's going to be a bore to get it fixed. Any top tips for things we can try first, since I think it's as likely to be software as hardware?
set up a new user

reinstall the OS

try booting from a FW disk

see if Target Disk Mode works

see if FW shows up in Apple System Profiler
