Hi Ben

If you've got a spare USB hard drive :

Connect the USB hard drive to your working MacBook and insert the OS X 
Installer DVD
Use Disk Utility to Restore the DVD drive to the USB drive
Boot the broken MacBook from the USB OS X Installer by holding alt at startup
Reinstall OS X on top of the MacBook's HD
