Thanks for that thought Sam. There are a LOT of messages like this which is clearly related to the problem but these were reported after the problem had happened:
04/04/2011 12:38:29 System Preferences[213] An instance 0x1c4430 of class ServiceNode was deallocated while key value observers were still registered with it. Observation info was leaked, and may even become mistakenly attached to some other object. Set a breakpoint on NSKVODeallocateBreak to stop here in the debugger. Previously I'd looked in Preferences >Keyboard >Keyboard Shortcuts and the 'Services' section was empty. Now it's not and suddenly everything is working again! Hey ho ...
