I tried both virtualbox & vmware fusion. The problem is to do with the passthrough not supporting multiple personalities of certain USB devices, eg the mifi shows up as a 3G modem & USB storage device, as part of the unlock process you need access to switch to diagnostic mode, the USB passthrough support only implements basic fanctiinality.
