A friend who's on the trading floor for Barclays (ie good with numbers) assures me that buying the handset outright, and then using 3 is the cheapest option - if you've the cash upfront, and 3 coverage of course!
I downgraded by 3G to 3.1.3 and it was like having a brand new phone again. Surprisingly easy to do, painless, and very worth it!
