Thanks for the advice Sam. She's just done it and apparently it 'hung' on the 
following (reported from memory so not 100% exact.
checking linked files
checking bitmap
bitmap volume

It was stuck on it for quite a while then things happened again and it finished 
booting.

Yes it is connected to broadband over a wifi network.
