Martin, general rule of thumb is to assume that a hard drive will fail. If it's a LaCie drive it will definitely fail. If 500gb is what you need, buy 2 and back one up to the other on a weekly/monthly rota.
Personally, I've had the fewest failures with Western Digital drives.
