Thanks to all for the suggestions you have made. My gut feeling is to go with a Western Digital 500 Gb or 1 Tb model. In my fury with my LaCie drives, they literally went out of the window when all my efforts to resuscitate them failed.
On a separate issue, I bought Lion today and will need to install it from a USB flash drive (as I have yet to buy my external drive). Can anyone suggest what size I need? I think the largest I have is 2 Gb which I suspect is not going to be large enough.
