If you get a standard network cable and link the two machines together it will be able to transfer at 1000Mbit as opposed to 400Mbit. You don't need to do any ip address fiddling as bonjour just lets the two macs "see" each other by magic. You run the assistant in the same way as normal if I remember correctly.
If she already has firewire devices then she will need to get one of the 800/400 adapters anyway, but if its only for the purpose of migrating then a standard ethernet cable is a) far cheaper, b) far more useful, and c) may already be lying around the house somewhere, i.e. free with her broadband service or something.
