You might have a bad block inside a file that Pages needs to load, does Pages
slow down while the ticking is happening?

Look in Applications > Utilities > Console > do you see any recurring entries
saying "I/O Error" or similar? If so then yes you have a bad block.

If you have a bad block or two you can backup then zero format the drive, that
will map out any bad blocks so they're never used again.

The best way of doing this is to install OS X on an external disk, boot from it
and back up your hard drive using superduper or carbon copy cloner. Zero the
drive then use super duper to clone back. Only if you've got bad blocks of
course!

You could use it as an opportunity to upgrade to a bigger, faster hard drive or
even a solid state drive for the ultimate speed boost.

If your Mac's under warranty you'll need to back it up using superduper or
carbon copy cloner, then restore once the drive's been replaced.

Sam
