A few suggestions - Restart Mac Restart Printer/Scanner Ensure you have latest Epson drivers installed Delete Printer/Scanner in Sys Prefs and reinstall Try other Apps designed to work with Scanner - Preview, Image Capture, ...
I used to have enormous problems scanning with my HP Printer/Scanner, just as you describe, they went away when I upgraded to Lion and/or the latest HP drivers.
