My own - extremely stupid - fault! I hadn't realised that I had to get a new 
cable for the printer! Having now bought a firewire 800 cable instead of 
stupidly imaging I could still use the firewire 400 cable that I'd had with 
older iMac, all is well and scanning perfectly. And - if it is not my 
imagination - quite a lot faster?!
