Hi all,

A few years back I asked if I could connect my Netgear DG384G to an Airport
Extreme and the kind answer from Sam was:

I have now bought an Airport Extreme and it's connected via Ethernet from the
Netgear and we have lovely, fast, reliable (for the first time!) wireless in
the house. However, I'm not sure if I can wake my iMac with the current setup
which I'd like to do if possible. I've found the DMZ page in the Netgear setup
but I don't understand what it's for and I've read several times about it not
being a good idea:

http://homepage.mac.com/car1son/static_port_fwd_portfwd.html

where it says "You can designate one computer on your home network as a DMZ
(DeMilitarized Zone, an odd reference to a system completely unprotected by the
Router's inherent firewall and exposed to the internet.) This forwards all
ports, UDP and TCP, to that single Mac. It can be used if you have only one Mac
running a server on your LAN, and if you don't mind that it removes the
firewall protections of your Router from that Mac."

Is this DMZ required for the remote wake aspect and if not what is it for and
why would I want to do it?

This all sounds a bit risky from what I've found online. Is there an
alternative or can I configure something in the Netgear and/or iMac that means
that our network setup will still be protected?

Sorry for the ignorance but I normally just connect my router and it works and
the arcane wonders of port forwarding and such like are rather lost on me ...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,

Stephen
