Hi Phil,

Suggest you try connecting to another Mac with ŒTarget Disk Mode¹ using a
Firewire cable (restart holding down the ³T² key).

This would enable you to tell if it¹s just the screen that has blown or
something more serious. If it is just the screen and you decide to buy a new
iMac at least you will be able to wipe the hard disk clean before your dump
it.

Subject: [sussex_mug] Dead iMac

All,

My daughter's elderly Intel 17" iMac has died. Switching on results in no
start-up chime, minimal hard-disk activity and a completely dark screen
the only sign of life is a glowing "on" light. I'm kind of assuming this is
an irrecoverable hardware failure and the thing needs to head for
re-cycling, but I thought I'd see what SMUG thinks just in case I'm missing
something.

Phil
