Ranulph, I can't help with the capacity issue and the message you're seeing displayed but you mention 'unfortunately' having bought the MacBook just before the release of new models. A friend of mine was in a similar position a few years back and returned to the Apple store (London) to ask if anything could be done. She was offered a swap, returning the 'old' new machine for the newest released machine, I think they were equivalently priced and there was nothing more to do other than the store transfer her data (again). Something to consider if you would like same, hopefully Apple still offer the same terms now as then.
