I'd go along with that in fact, whichever Mac you buy, you MUST see it working. Also, take a DVD Movie along with you and if you can, get it playing for at least 20 minutes to make sure there are no thermal/heat issues and that the optical drive works as expected.
Once you've checked it out, do not let it out of your sight - could be an urban legend but I've heard of a couple of instances where some one has executed due diligence only to let the seller take the iMac away 'To pack it up in its box.'
