Apple doesn't have an exclusive hold over thunderbolt. It's an intel-developed
spec which is on already on a few PC motherboards. The main reason why it's
expensive is that it's new & whizzy and manufacturers have to recoup their
development costs.

I've just ordered the new Drobo Thunderbolt enclosure, though I'll be using it
through USB3 with my MacPro until end of next year. It was bloody expensive but
the speed's essential for me.

Even the TB cables cost £40 as they have circuits inside the connectors. I
dread to think what an optical TB cable costs.
