You ptobably have less than 30 days to get things in order until your cookies
expire and your locked from webmail for good. Generated passwords for mail.app
etc should stay working until you get it deactivated

Subject: [sussex_mug] cautionary tale about Google 2-step
authentication/suggestions for permanent alternative to gmail
To: "smug" <[email protected]>

Hi everyone...

After being hacked a few months ago on this address I switched on 2-step
authentication. All was well until I got my iPhone replaced in June. Now
Google authenticator doesn't work (I foolishly thought it would work as
before from the backup but you have to uh authenticate using their app.)
No problem, they have a back-up phone number to send a code to - but
that never works. I've emailedthem four times but they're useless.

So -- I can access email but can't change settings or set up new
machines and devices to do email.

If anyone knows how to sort this out please let me know (I suspect it
involves 'knowing someone at google') but even if I get back in, I've
had it with gmail and want to move to a permanent alternative -- paid if
necessary.

Moral -- have plenty of back-up codes stored for emergencies for 2-step
authentication (which is entirely useless if you lose your iphone, I
note, as they can authenticate from there). Do not expect a landline to
be any use whatsoever or that they will reply to messages through their
system. Especially, if you've loggedthat you have a problem, do NOT
check email (this triggers a mistaken 'oh good, you've got it all
working again' message and no messages will be answered following that
at all).

Actually, don't switch it on, is my advice. just choose good, unique,
passwords and change them regularly.
