I have 4GB of Apple RAM and 8GB of Crucial RAM (installed the day I got my iMac home). This never caused a problem with Lion and since installing 10.8.1 I have so far been free of any more crashes.
My partner's MacBook Air has only the Apple installed 4GB. I don't know if that helps at all really ...
