tea-towelled pointing trowel, all done in less than a minute.

That usually happens where people lift the MacBook up with one hand and over 
time the DVD tray bows. Get a large-ish flat blade screwdriver and wrap a 
teatowel round it once, then gently pry the middle of the DVD drive apart by 
twisting the screwdriver inside it. Be very gentle so as not to damage the 
plastic but you should find it bends back to a normal shape.
