Phil,

Depends on how large the final library is going to be. The thing you have to
consider is the way that TimeMachine deals with the iPhoto Library - as a
single 'item'.

Lets say you have an iPhoto Library that is 60-70gb in size. Every time you
open iPhoto, the '~Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library item is marked as 'Modified'
and TimeMachine will back the whole thing up. Assuming TimeMAchine is running
every hour during an 8 hour day, that would be 560gb of backups assuming each
hourly backup would complete in an hour. With a 1TB destination….. you do the
maths!

If you have access to a recent copy of the Adobe Creative Suite/PhotoShop
you'll also have access to Adobe Bridge, which is a media asset management
program. Using this to manage your Picture Library will mean that TimeMachine
only backs up new files of files that have actually been changed, not the whole
library every time.

For interest, Apple's Aperture and Adobe's LightRoom have the same issues as
iPhoto, as far as TimeMachine is concerned.
