If it's a 1st Gen iPad then it's probably just the more advanced iOS than it 
shipped with making higher demands on the hardware than it was designed for. 
All 1st Gen iPads I've used with iOS 6 have been much slower than iOS 5. I 
don't think iOS 7 will run on a 1st Gen so that may be just the speed it will 
be I'm afraid.

You could try restoring within iTunes (after a full backup) and see if that 
helps.
