Sam, what did you do? I have an 'iPad Classic' and it can't be updated past 5.1.1. ;-)
I feel just the same as you Alastair, it was much faster with iOS 3 and iOS 5 certainly slows it down, especially when web browsing. My 5th gen. iPod touch runs rings round it in the speed department. I'm planning on going for the next iPad as it will sadly be time to put this out to grass.
