Just a thought. Could it be the action of a virus infection which sends
emails to your contacts in your address list.
Was there any sign of the outgoing emails in your sent folder?
It is worth checking but I am not sure if this virus does leave such
evidence.

Not an IOS problem! Boring old Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and Mail. Just opened my
MacBook Air up from sleep and I almost immediately got the sound of emails
disappearing into the ether (about one every second) even though there was
nothing waiting to go. I quit Mail and that stopped it and having reopened it
all is normal again. It has happened a couple of times before - last time about
a month ago after waking from sleep.
Any ideas anyone
Thanks in advance
